Halloween Candy Buy Back for Operation Gratitude
Seeing that there is no shortage of toothbrushes in our house, I was saddened to learn that it’s not uncommon for the men and women overseas to have only a single toothbrush per deployment. I can say that it made me feel quite guilty for the plethora of rouge brushes that we have here. Knowing that I couldn’t dig the ones out from under the sink out for cleaning, I decided it was time to see what I could do to make a change, no matter how small it was.
I stumbled across Operation Gratitude through their Halloween candy buyback program. Dental offices accept candy from trick-or-treaters, typically at $1.00/lb. My personal response when I see things like this is to jump right in, so in true gumption form, that’s what I did
.I just put a collection box out at my mailbox center. Much to my surprise, people ACTUALLY came and dropped off candy. Seeing as this wasn’t a typical office situation, there was a bit of confusion as to how I would buy back the candy. I set appointments and met with the families to weigh candy and give out toothbrushes. I was able to collect 35lbs of candy in total; still however, my original purpose for this whole exercise was to get toothbrushes to the troops.
Thanks to Butler Gum, Zila Pharmaceuticals (makers of Rota dent) and Dr. Mark Miller in helping send over 75 toothbrushes and 120 tubes of toothpaste along with the candy. Today, I am thankful for many reasons, and this is a pretty big part of that feeling. It has allowed me to slow down and re establish the feeling of well being by doing something for someone else with no strings attached. I hope everyone has a loving and happy holiday season. For more information about the Halloween Candy Buy Back and Operation Gratitude and to find out how you can help please follow these links
