How To Use the Burst Water Flosser To Reduce Cavities and Gum Disease

Let’s talk about how the Burst water flosser can help you reduce cavities and eliminate gum disease in as little as five minutes a day. If you are interested in impressing your hygienist at your next appointment, then keep reading.

Before we get into the details of the Burst water flosser, and why I love it so much, we have to talk about why you need this device. It’s because of an often overlooked critter probably lurking in your mouth, biofilm.

What is Biofilm?

I know I’m not going to win the mom of the year award when I say that I hate slime. I always used to dread when we would get asked to go to a birthday party for my son, and the activity was making slime. Or even worse, when we would get a goodie bag, and there would be a surprise slime at the bottom of the bag. Sure, it looks pretty harmless at first, but it can get rubbed into your carpet so fast, or even worse, in your child’s hair! Don’t you just hate slime?

There’s actually a type of slime I hate worse than all the others though. And if you’ve been around me for any length of time, you’ve probably heard me talk about it. It’s biofilm.

Biofilm is a slime, or more accurately a sticky little matrix of bacteria that is found in several areas of the body, and even our environment at large. For our purposes, we’ll just be focused on oral biofilm, this is biofilm that adheres to the tooth. Normally, if bacteria are alone, there’s not a big issue, but when they get into one community and start to breed together, that‘s where cavities and gum disease can become an issue.

If you have cavities or gum disease, you often have a biofilm issue. I’ve seen thousands of mouths, and I can tell you that controlling biofilm is almost always a significant problem.

Diseased oral biofilm is associated with some of the biggest diseases we find in our lives. This includes heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, and even preterm births. Crazy, right? So one of the most important things that you can do to have a healthy mouth is to learn how to manage biofilm.

How Do You Manage Biofilm?

Now that you know unhealthy biofilm is not your friend, you probably want to know what you need to do to get rid of it.

On the regular surfaces that we brush or even areas that we can get with floss, biofilm can usually be easily managed. However, biofilm typically likes to hang out in the nooks and crannies of your mouth, these are the spaces in between the teeth and deep in the gums.

Deep in your gum pockets is something called gingival crevicular fluid (say that three times fast!). This fluid is different from the saliva on your teeth. If you have biofilm buildup, it can make your gingival crevicular fluid acidic, which can lead to problems. If you neutralize these acids in your mouth, it will help you eliminate diseased biofilm.

Here’s a 5-minute video I did explaining biofilm management if you want more information.

How Does The Burst Water Flosser Help You Manage Biofilm?

One of my new favorite tools for helping to control biofilm is the Burst Water Flosser. It’s a waterpik-like device that uses pulsated and pressurized water to get in between your teeth and deep in your gums, which is where that pesky biofilm likes to hide.

Also, the pressurized water gets deep into the gum pockets and cleans out the gingival crevicular fluid, so when you use it consistently, you’ll be able to reduce biofilm, leading to healthier gums and fewer cavities. It’s small, lightweight, and it’s also waterproof. I like to use mine in the shower. The best part is that it should only take you less than five minutes to use!

Alright, I hope you learned something new today about biofilm and how controlling biofilm is one of the key things to focus on to reduce cavities and improve your gum health. Now, it’s your turn. What questions do you have about biofilm? I’d love to hear below.
