So, What Does An Oral Health Coach Do?

I get asked this question a lot… and I mean A LOT!  Why?  Because oral health coaches are few and far between.  But what exactly does an Oral Health Coach do, and more importantly, why?

Oral Health Coaching is about taking the skills that someone has learned as a dental hygienist and bringing them to the home, the institution or the school.  Not the scaling teeth and lecturing part of a teeth cleaning, instead it’s the explanation and problem solving part, and the part where the patient has an ah-ha moment and is able to connect the dots themselves.  It’s about arming everyday people with the information they need to take care of their teeth and gums day in and day out.

Wait, so you’re not going to “clean” my teeth?

No because the focus is not about “cleaning” you teeth; instead the focus is on helping the person you work with learn about taking care of their entire mouth in a way that they see appropriate.  If you want to floss, we will show you how to do it effectively, if you have the latest and greatest technology we will help you learn how to actually use it, and if you can only afford a manual toothbrush we will show you how to use it in a way that gets to more nooks and crannies than you could ever imagine.

Oral health coaches understand that every single person on this planet has a mouth, and many of those mouths have significant issues that can be tackled if people are armed with the correct information.  It’s about helping in a non judgmental manner and getting to the root of the issue (no pun intended).  It’s about understanding what disease, medications and dexterity do to the mouth and how to combat each issue.  It’s about knowing how to tackle things like dry mouth, how to adapt with arthritis, and how to use specific products when people are challenged with issues…..emotional and physical.

Providing you with the tools and skills you need at home

Oral health coaches go where few other people go.  The mouth is an extremely vulnerable place for many people, and when you reach people on a level that makes them feel heard and understood, the barrier is broken and peoples guard is let down.  This is where healing and release begin.

You may be amazed at just how many people are TERRIFIED of the dentist…..but just like anything else, once you tackle the fear, it goes away.  And once you use the right products and the right technique the disease goes away too making the dental office a less scary, less expensive and less shameful place to be.

Yes, you can have a healthy mouth for a lifetime!

Imagine if you would a place where your teeth did not hurt, your gums did not bleed or recede, your breath stayed fresh for long periods of time, and where you didn’t build up plaque and tartar that needed to be scraped away…..this is what oral health coaches work on, we bridge the gap between what dental offices do, and what happens at home day in and day out.  And for those that cannot afford the dentist, well we may just be your greatest ally because the skills you learn with an oral health coach will help you keep your teeth and gums healthy day in and day out!If you are curious about oral health coaching, I invite you to check out 21 Days to a Healthy Mouth
